FUCK ON THE BEACH | TERLARANG Split

Pre-order 12inch vinyl & Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/fotb-terlarang-split-lp
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/fuck-on-the-beach-terlarang-split

This split is relentless and will hurt your ears in a charming way, fun frantic ear-splitters from start to finish.

Fuck On The Beach
If you don't know what to expect here I can't really help, this is brutal, lightspeed clattering blasts, razorwire treble drenched guitar and whirling layered screaming at it's finest. Plenty of ear splitting distortion, feedback, mics peaking and everything way too loud in the best way. This is fun loving fastcore powervioelce from Japan which I'm pretty sure even has a 'clap-track' on the self titled outro track. Fucking excelent. This side of the split is primarily hyper fast d-beats with the odd blast thrown in, so is sonically the inverse of the Terlarang side. For fants of Japanese style everything faster and louder style grindviolence.

Terlarang Lo-fi to the point of incomprehensibility this side of the split goes even further down the slopes of  treble-valley than Fuck On The Beach, sounding like the guitars are physically tearing the speaker cones from the amp and the rest of the band are trying frantically to hold them back in. Everything here is fast, no slow at all on this side. Maybe one or two slightly slower than lightspeed d-beat smashers floating about in there but this is really all about the pace. The fast as fuck and don't care nature is epitomised by the cats on the split cover and the last track basically sounding like black metal but being called 'Stop The Hate' in what seems to be a conscious rejection of the bullshit ideals of traditional NSBM. Nice.

BIND TORTURE KILL 'Viscères'

Pre-order LP & Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/btk-visceres-lp
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/bind-torture-kill-visceres

Devastating French Post-Hardcore three piece BIND TORTURE KILL release their second high speed slab of chaotic blackened post hardcore on the album 'Viscères'. Following in the footsteps of giants like Trap Them and Converge but finding heavier emphasis in 'blackened' elements than either.

'Blackened' here referring to moments of echoing reverb, hanging on an abyssal chord for a few seconds, or giving in to brief exaggeratedly blasting trem-picked sections. However this tag should not detract from what is primarily a thorough study in chaotic post-hardcore.

Recorded at Warmaudio in their native Lyon BIND TORTURE KILL pluck at the essence of the classic 'Relapse Hardcore' sound; fast guitar runs interspersed with RIFFS pulled from the aether, instilling a contemporary twist on it with a clanging, raw production sound, atmospheric dynamic breaks and tight instrumental performances. The album pulses with swelling instrumental interludes providing parenthesis around solid chunks of blast-tinged, rolling chaotic hardcore. Vocally frontman Olivier delivers verse in native French, providing discourse in the manner of prose, dealing with the horror and darkness found for many in contemporary society, murder, drug abuse and the almost exclusively death metal territory of ghoul behaviour (grave robbing).
These themes are all symboloised in the artwork, providing stark monochrome imagery of a jackal and vultures fighting over a carcass.

BIND TORTURE KILL are really pushing the boundries of what can be acomplished by a single guitarist and drummer line up (albeit with three amps, ala Magrudergrind), using intelligent song structure and aplication of pedals the band really sounds like the "full" two guitars and bass more usually seen in the genre. Track times on this 34minute, 9 song release vary in length from under two minutes to over seven, this speaks to the band's ability to write diverse music while retaining their own sound and not straying from being very firmly grounded in the Post-Hardcore genre.

LAST CLIMB 'Leave It To Rot'

Pre-order 7" & Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/lastclimb-leave-it-to-rot-ep
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/last-climb-leave-it-to-rot

LAST CLIMB present a debut of coruscating Swedish hardcore punk inthe finest tradition of Anti-Cimex, Disfear etc. The guitar/guitar/bass and drums line up find their own sound with a rawness of production and harshness of subject matter, pulling slighty away from some of the more "rock and roll" elements (cheesy solos and upbeat chorus sections) a lot of traditional d-beat bands follow while retaining elements like the occasional screaming lead and foot stomping, moshy riff sections.

Occasionally they sneak cross-genre into sludging slow motion riffing breakdowns, but never for longer than a few seconds before speeding back up to a respectable hardcore kilter. Tonaly the release is reminiscent of hard stuff like Bloody Phoenix with that kind of suffocating level of gain on the guitars, buzzsaw bass tone and maximised snare kicking the listener in the skull, tinted with harsh but not overpowering vocals.

Lyrically LAST CLIMB stick to the themes implied by the name, with a quintessentially Swedish focus on environment most of the 6 tracks deal in someway with depression in addition to the traditionally antifascist subject matter of d-beat hardcore.

All in LEAVE IT TO ROT is an extremely promising debut from a new band that really seem to know their stuff while innovating just enough to give a traditional formula an extra shine.

CLUNGE PLUNGER 'Shitcanned'

Pre-order 7" & Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/clungeplunger-shitcanned-ep
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/clunge-plunger-shitcanned

London grinders CLUNGE PLUNGER return with another fat slab of catchy metallic sludgegrind on 'SHITCANNED'. This will be the bands first physical release (they have 2 digital releases preceeding this), but being that they formed in 2012 and having not been inactive in the London crust and grind scene means this is a consummate display of beer drenched blasting, vocals that range from sewer level gutterals to throat wrenching screams, clanking tank-tread bass and growling, gain drenched guitar.

The sludge influence makes itself felt in the slower, almost rock n' roll sections and somewhat in the recording, though this is a very crusty and raw listening experience there is no mismanaging of studio time, with a great level of clarity in the performances. Everything is audible and moves easily and naturally between Eyehategod style riffing, ENT d-beats and outright pulverising contemporary grind in the vein of Rotten Sound or Pig Destroyer.

A crusty, rocking partygrind release well worth it's 12minute runtime!

'Dear World...' Video taken from 'Disrepair'
https://youtu.be/JaKSCVeQxdE

The North East of Englands hardcore scene has faded into relative darkness compared to a decade or so ago, but there are a those who keep the torches burning. Durham riff merchants GEIST are one such band. With a sound that is self described as “...too metal for the punks and too punk for metalheads" and one that goes several steps further than the generic "mosh-core" that has encroached on the wider scene in recent years, GEIST have carved a dark, festering wound into the body of UK hardcore and with their latest offering, a single sided 12” LP and limited DIGI CD aptly entitled Disrepair, they show no sign of relenting.

Recorded by UK hardcore veteran Jason Frye at Century Audio and mastered by the legendary Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, Disrepair imposes 6 chaotic tracks of dark, crusty hardcore which transcends enough genre boundaries to appeal to fans of anything fast, heavy and loud but a concoction of bands akin to Cursed and Converge would define it perfectly.

On this release the Macedonian crust four piece conjure memories of classic mid-tempo Death Metal with a thundering collection of old-school riffs and d-beats. The self titled 12" opens and closes with clean guitar runs that could have been pulled straight from an 80's death/thrash album, and the guitar continues this feel throughout, mixing classic metal-punk influences like Wolfbrigade with thrash and classic melodic Swedeath sensibilities for a properly air-punching, foot-stomping and neck wrecking collection of tracks.

The drums never stray far from breakneck speed d-beat land and you get the impression even on the slower sections of track the band are impatient to get back to the fast again! Though clearly drawing from very old-school influences here the performances and production feels very modern.

All the instruments are audible, and the performences, though undeniably playing in a very 'traditional' style (lots of guitar trem picking and galloping bass to be found here) are extremely tight and focussed.

Though brief this release gives the distinct impression of quality over quantity, feeling like a 'best of' performence of Bolt Throwers' 'The IVth Crusade'. Massive riffs, screaming solos, pounding D-beats and howling vocals, what more could a metal-punk ask for!!

DEAD LIKE ME 'A Terre, Amas De Reves'

Lurching riffs bludgeon the listeners ears on this French math-influenced hardcore LP. The band switches back and forth between Converge or early Dillinger Escape Plan inflected stabbing odd-time chords and thunderous grooving Ken Mode-ish bass led slow motion mosh moments with consumate precision. In places the odd times and dynamic riffing is reminicent of early Relapse hardcore bands like Burnt By The Sun, but less blasting and more growling.

The album art (created by the drummer) references the ancient Greek myth of Persephone. While this is not a full on prog rock concept album about a singular piece of mythology, there are elements of the sound here that certainly draw from a preogressive sensibility.

Several tracks feature lengthly atmospheric sections, atmospheric in the traditional sense rather than the more modern 'noise' sense, with layers of intelligently built guitar sound and washes of cymbals building a feeling of melancholy. These inevitably break down into the next track, crashing against the ears with a sound like a dying machine struggling across an arid landscape of the future. The guitars are hugely heavy without resorting to ear scraping levels of distortion, they both jangle and thunder in the same breath, the bass sits high in the mix, with a touch of a growling, RAT-like edge to it, the drums tie it all together with a clean and punchy sound, no clanging snare or robotic kicks, the sound is very natural and satisfying, vocals range from a deep growl to a desperate, hoarse throated cry, fitting perfectly with the atmosphere of the instrumentals.

This is an exciting and forward thinking album, bringing old school hardcore influences forward into the present while sacrificing none of their raw intensity.

DEAD LIKE ME on tour 04 - 11 October 2017

NUDIST 'Bury My Innocence'

Pre-order LP / Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/nudist-bury-my-innocence-lp
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/nudist-bury-my-innocence

Italian trio NUDIST pound aurally swirling atmospheric sludge into the listener with chugging guitars, odd-time grooves and reverberating metallic barks on 'BURY MY INNOCENCE'. This noise plumbs the depths of sounds summoned by the likes of Cult Of Luna and early ISIS colliding and blending with the bass-led crushing grooves of groups like KEN Mode and Unsane. Tight drums underpin and play around the roiling, churning chunk of the bass, implacable in its counting of time, and sit neatly under the guitars who pan between math-tinged spiky chord exchanges and languid, emotive chord progressions.

NUDIST are a band that have evolved consistently over their near ten year history and this, their fourth release and second with vocals, ties together all their prior influences into a seemless package. This isn't music to lose yourself to, it is sound to lose yourself in. Either among the swirling tidal chaos of the opening tracks or through hypnotic head-nodding as the album reaches climax. Not one for fans of atmospheric sludge, 'post' metal or the Neurosis tinged fringes of Hardcore to miss.

Ornaments & Nudist on tour 7. October – 15. October

SEVENTH GENOCIDE 'Toward Akina'

www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/seventh-genocide-toward-akina

When thinking of post-black metal, we all usually think of dissonant and morbid guitar patterns, fast drumming and that long abused "religious" feeling which has been for a long time the trademark of the actual genre. Alternatively, we think of the shoegazy style of bands such as Alcest, Lantlos and all those others who have mixed the genre with a more "rock-oriented" sound. That is why, after so many years, is always incredibly amazing when bands are capable of creating a completely new way of intending the genre.

Over the black-metal roots of the style, Seventh Genocide have found their own voice and took the definition of "post-black metal" to a brand new level. Forget dissonances, forget shoegaze. If Pink Floyd could have played black metal, there is a huge possibility that their sound could have been not so far from what these Italians have to offer.  With a certain level of psychedelia mixed with a classic black metal approach of pure North European origins (early Hades, Isvind, Windir, early-Taake), Seventh Genocide are able to shift from blast-beat driven moments to pure evocative fragments of outstanding emotional beauty.

The band talks about the new album as follows:
"The concept of the album is focalized on death and transcendence from human to spiritual being across the astral planes of existence, analyzing life and love as causes of dissatisfaction and the powerlessness of the human condition in relation to the immensity and the eternity of nature. Those themes take shape through a rich blend of different musical genres and influences. Post-Black Metal played with a 70’s rock taste and contaminated with atmospheric post-rock parts and Pink Floyd-ish psychedelic passages."

Of course, talking about Pink Floyd, the task is not as easy as it sounds. Yet, the band has perfectly been able to merge all of those influences and the result is highly intense.

PROLEFEED | HENRY KANE Split

Pre-order 12inch vinyl / Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/prolefeed-henrykane-split-lp
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/prolefeed-henry-kane-split

This split marks the long awaited third vinyl release of crusty North East UK hardcore oinks Prolefeed, written immediately following 2015s ear pummeling split with War All The Time. The fact that this was recorded and mixed in a single day speaks to the raw speed and agression on display and the ten tracks blitz past within 13 mins.
This is drummer Rob Woodcock’s final release with the band but he goes out on a high, bullying the snare through relentless thrashing d-beats and rapid, clattering fills. This whole side buzzes with a screaming treble-strung intesity to the production, and a suprising (for those unfamiliar with the band) clarity to the instrumentals. The bass in particular has a very clear tone, Dan's fantastic, lighning fast runs cutting through the tradtitionally crusty buzzsaw guitar for some stand out moments of musicianship, running counter to the abrasive vocal screams of frontman Dickie (also of Sawn Off).
Ten rapid fire songs with signature caustic guitar riffs, blitzkrieg basslines and Melvinsesque drumming, this isn’t your average hardcore record.

Quickly following up their debut "Den förstörda människans rike", Henry Kane provides 9 minutes of punishing one-man Swedish Swedeath grindcore. Following the same path of audial terror. Henry Kane is the solo effort of Johnny Pettersson of Wombbath, Ashcloud, Gods Forsaken and dozens of other nightmare inducing death metal bands. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Studio Unbound, you could be forgiven for thinking this side of the split was a previously unreleased Rotten Sound effort. Absolutely relentless clinical blast beats and ear shattering chainsaw guitar sounds argue with throat shredding vocals here.
These five tracks have no time for pretension, no prog moments of atmosphere or technical peacocking. The only atmosphere is that of a dense cloud of gain, the only technicality the speed of the performence. Proper blasting grind!

Art by Prolefeed bassist Daniel Hughes in response to a wave of religious violence and thoughtless hatred perpetuated by the media. Fuck religious violence//Fuck religious hate. The Mass Forfeiture of Collective Responsibility comes with a wrap around 2 foot poster and is released on the 13th October via WOOAAARGH & Goatshead Records!

STUNTMAN | COWARDS Split

Pre-order 7inch vinyl / Digital
www.wooaaargh.com/stuntman-cowards-split
www.wooaaargh.bandcamp.com/album/stuntman-cowards-split

Grooving metallic hardcore veterans STUNTMAN open up on 'Parish' with a rolling stomper of a riff that shifts dynamically from palm muted chugging to full bore screaming mosh-violence across the relatively short track length. Building on a solid foundation of huge drums this track has the swaggering attitude of a proper mosh anthem. In common with their fellow Frenchmen in COWARDS this track was recorded live and that raw quality and energy seeps from the pores of this track in infectious waves, other tracks from this recording session are to be released as another split with the peerless Art of Burning Water and as a standalone flexi. This is an incredibly catchy ear-worm of grooving metallic hardcore in the finest traditions of the masters (Converge, Botch, etc). It serves as a perfect counterpoint to the melancholic bleakness of the COWARDS side with driving riff-led head-smashing joy!

Parisians COWARDS unleash the audible equivalent of a panic attack on their half of this split. Gruesome blackened hardcore trem picking covers the listener in a static veil. Lurching between a blasting opening section and a growling, slurring outro, coated in shimmering reverb and razor sharp gain. 'Pulled Hair' was recorded at the same time as the bands 2016 studio album 'Still', and retains the energy and bleak atmosphere of that release along with the furious production quality. Shrieking vocals penetrate the trademark scathing guitar riffs, underpinned by thundering, churning drums and the crushing tank-tread tone of the bass. There is an echoing sadness with the outro that pulls the listener back down after the rage of the opening, it is like the noise equivalent of hair pulling, the instant of pain and anger, followed by trying to understand the act. Blackened Hardcore at it's most incisive and effective.
