Almost a decade after their formation, and five years after their self-released debut, Potuguese post-rock five piece JUSEPH present 'Oreida', their latest exploration in "Massive Delays and Massive Distortions".

The bands motto becomes apparent almost immediately on 'Heavy Sea', the monolithic opening track contains all the elements of JUSEPH's sound. From crushingly heavy guitars and pummeling, drum led riff sections, through swirls of glittering ambience and cymbal swells, the band knows their influences and executes a flawless performance here.

The depth of instrumentals comes frome the broadness of instrumentation available to the members, the band operates as a classic post-rock 4 piece (drums, bass, guitar, guitar) but the addition of Rafael playing third guitar or synth has clearly opened the group up to even more avenues of expression, and more depth to their ambient layering than is the norm for the genre. The synth use is quite subtle, the band aren't creating dance-pop anthems by any means, instead it will just occasionally break through the mix, like a siren in the fog, or sit just under the guitars like fog along the shore.

The band references ISIS, Pelican and Russian Circles amongst their influences, and though these are certainly apparent in their sound, JUSEPH carve their own niche in the wall of the post-rock menhir. Sculpting their own sonic caverns for the listener to dwell in, listing on the border between tranquility and chaos, occasionally embracing one or the other but always in a natrualistic way, 'Oreida' takes the listener on a perfectly orchestrated post-rock journey.

Gothenburg epic soundscape explorers SVARTA STUGAN present Islands/ Öar, a musical journey running in the vein of atmospheric groups like Earth and Mogwai, in places touching on cinematic composers such as Philip Glass or Ennio Morricone.

The songs presented here follow strong post-rock sensibilities, building crascendos, a clear taste for melody and intense dynamics. Islands is a clear theme for the music and each song feels like a short movie, each with an accompanying mood, it's own weather and topography.

The instruments play their roles well here, and all have very individual and singular sounds/purposes- guitars are sparkling layers of reverb laden melody ala Explosions In The Sky, there is interplay between synth and guitar trading lead duties or building layers of noise, standing out like rocks amongst the current of sound.

Occasionally the synth with move into organ-like tones for rhythm accompaniment, or add ghostly high notes over the lead guitar. There are times where the bass and drums take over, working on driving rhythm underpinning more fractured sections.

Toward the end of the release there are a few more melodic, almost leading, bass lines, and the drums become closer to dams, building up sound behind them then releasing it on waves of cymbal crashes in each fill.

The whole album has a rolling, constantly moving feel, while never going into fully distorted noise insanity, it remains much closer to a soundtrack for an unmade film than anything else.

This release is the perfect accompaniment to a long drive or lone train ride, the hallmark of a strong post-rock release!

Face destroying Blackened Hardcore monsters TELOS present their debut of the same name. Drawing significant influence from contemporary blast merchants Hexis and angular, chaotic riff titans Converge TELOS create their own sound through an alliance of these concepts.

This masterpiece shifts from rushing breathless sections of hasty drums and frantic riff to super aggressive hyperblasting to sudden melodic drops and back again. Coming in at under the 30minute mark this output does an admirable job of exploring the concept presented under the title; TELOS being Greek for 'End', the release follows ideas of environmental collapse, the problems of post-modern society and overpopulation, and plays with ideas of metaphysical beings as metaphors, embodying the eponymous TELOS as a deity-like humanity destroying creature.

Following this almost sci-fi story like structure is refreshingly unusual in this genre and the band pulls it off remarkably well. Their sound is certainly comparable to that of a destruction deity. In short this is a brutally effective release in the blackened hardcore genre that will satisfy anyone looking for their blasting dissonance fix while at the same time offering interest and depth for repeated listens with a strong conceptual leaning and unusual instrumentation.

Clocking in at around 22 minutes long the Northampton three piece waste no time with overlong intro/outro sections or frilly atmosphere, THE ATROCITY EXHIBIT go straight for the jugular, with old school Napalm Death-esque slippery guitar riffs snuggled up neatly against rock and roll rhythms that would give Lemmy cause to grin ear to ear.

The album rolls through several themes and is really nicely bookended with short, rocking riffs which, while not being identical, share a thematic similarity. The album as a whole hangs together amazingly well, there is a real sense of care in the composition of these songs. Everything is super tight from the songwriting to Matt's ridiculously clean drum sound and performances. Tracks blur from blasting gang vocals and brain shredding trem picking riffs to building chord progressions to grooving Motorhead beats and moments of dreadlocked, crust infused glory fit to have the surliest Doom fan punching the air and stamping their feet.

This is a properly excellent extreme music release that will please all smelly crust and grind fans, a strong competitor for grind album of the year!!
