SERPENT EATER 'Vanitas' LP
Release Date 17 January 2020

limited edition of only 350 red copies on 180g vinyl.
comes with a heavy cover, insert with lyrics and liner notes and bandcamp download code of the entire album.

SERPENT EATER know exactly who they are and what they are doing on 'Vanitas'. Opening with a stomping black metal crusher of a riff overlaid with cackling screams and ripping double kicks, this is blackened crust at it's most operatic and metallic.

The production and performances here are supremely polished and well rehearsed, there isn't so much as a squeak of feedback that feels out of place.

Soundwise SERPENT EATER lean heavily on the black metal side, with rocking black'n'roll sections interspersed with huge sounding blasts and absolutely punishing double kick drums.

Their riffs are certainly serpentine as well, meandering around and over the drums like the coils of a resting python, springing to life for moments of attack before coiling back in on themselves.

Vocally they range from the head tilted back howling screams of black metal to almost guttural death growls, this is used almost instrumentally to add dynamics to their compositions.

This is a professional and expertly performed and produced release that sees SERPENT EATER sounding like a true venue destroyer, certainly a band at the very top of their game and worth catching!

DOGS FOR BREAKFAST 'Suiru' LP
Release Date 04 October 2019

limited edition of only 100 gold and 200 black vinyl copies
comes with a 350g cover and full colored print

Nearly four years since their last release, the “Dogs For Breakfast / Bologna Violenta” split album, Italian noise mongers DOGS FOR BREAKFAST return with “Suiru”, a jarring dirge in 8 movements that sees the band further evolving into an animal all of its own.

The album represents yet another pivot point in the band’s sound, a further departure from the hardcore-metal focused songs of their early releases. On “Suiru” the group delve deeper, and darker than ever before. This vicious full-length may be the group’s quintessential statement of violence and despair made sonic.

Drawing from not only the desperate noise and post hardcore sonics of the 90’s and early 2000’s, DOGS FOR BREAKFAST have mixed in the decidedly darker tone and presence of extreme metal, expertly captured by Dano Battocchio at O.F.F. Studio and Deepest Sea Studio, with mastering provided by Brad Broatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Tragedy, High On Fire and many more).

KAFKA s/t LP
Release Date 12 July 2019

limited edition doom black vinyl,
heavy 380g cover, insert with lyrics and liner notes

Sprawling Blackened Hardcore masters KAFKA keep it jangly on their self titled debut. The Greek four piece produce anti-fascist atmospheric hardcore in the finest tradition of bands like Fall Of Efrafa, blending mid-tempo brooding atmosphere with darkly shifting d-beat crust sections and an ingrained sense of melody.

Of interesting note is that this band does not sound chaotic as is often the case with blackened hardcore. Rather, KAFKA take an approach measured around song writing and clearly defined musical elements. The weight is still there in the sections you would expect to sound heavy, but it is built from clear musicianship and precise application of sound over tearing blastbeats and trem picking.

The instruments are all super clear and well defined despite being soaked in distortion and reverb. The bass stands out particularly, cutting through on the slower sections and anchoring the mix to the solid bedrock of the drums while the guitars take off on a melodic led journey and the vocals pull sounds of pain from the depths of a cave somewhere.

Overall KAFKA pull together a strong set of influences into a thought provoking neck snapper of a full length that doesn't outstay it's welcome, takes no shit and leaves the listener ready to repeat. Solid.

KALPA 'A Grand Misconception' LP
Release Date 28 June 2019

limited edition doom black vinyl,
heavy 380g cover, insert with lyrics and liner notes

KALPA take no prisoners on the ear shredding 'A Grand Misconception', eight tracks that start as they mean to go on, blasting metallic hardcore with an almost mathematical edge in places. It's like the first time you heard Converge but at a heavier pitch, less shrieking more direct hoarse roars in the vocals.

The music shifts gears rapidly, tearing between ripping blasts, furiously downpicked chugs, mad tapping and ringing chords. This is a band aggressively in sync with themselves, every track feels incredibly polished and rehearsed, the recording and production are impeccable, KALPA sound huge.

The Athens five piece feel like they are putting 100% of themselves into this sound, each track has so many intricate nuances among the chaos, from the way they flick between riffs to individual slight variations in picking pattern or drum beat in the section itself.

The band is intensely anti-fascist and draws heavily on this in their lyrics and songwriting, these guys are clearly not comfortable in modern society and they don't want you to be either.

"A Grand Misconception" will leave listeners furious and frantic. This will definitely be a band to catch live if this release captures even one tenth of the energy they put out in concert.

An incredibly crushing release that while not challenging the ears of those that know the genre will bring those same ears delight with the sheer professionalism and skill on display in both performance and song writing.

Drawing together too many influences to list in a sentence they forge their own sound while referencing the strongest moments of those that came before. Unpretentious and uncompromising, deserving of a place in any metallic hardcore fans collection.

100,000 TONNEN KRUPPSTAHL prepare to bury listeners' ears in crumbling valve warmth on their third full length 'Teeth Fletcher'. One enormous track in four parts, the German guitar/drums duo build a twisted tone shrine from doom and noise components. Strong references can be found amongst the foundation to groups like The Melvins and Bongripper, with layers of supremely fuzz drenched guitar churning above a core of dynamic, rolling drums that refuse to sit still. This is Doom with drive.

'Teeth Fletcher' plays almost like prose, it has themes and returns to ideas, book-ending sections with a remembered riff or drum pattern. The vocals come (as much of the album does) in a layered style, ranging from shouting and drawn out almost spoken word sounding sections, to demonic sounding howls and screeching. These vocals mimic the dynamics and pacing of the instruments, and they vary their pace rhythmically. At it's fastest it is hard not to have bands like High On Fire spring to mind, with the punishing drums and growling riffs overtaking each other in true Motor-charged fashion.

100,000 TONNEN KRUPPSTAHL do not even flirt with pretension on 'Teeth Fletcher', there are no drawn out noise atmospheres, no technical guitar licks, nothing to distract from the power of the riff and the strength of the individual performances. The drums are strong and present throughout, never sitting still or abating in their consistent pummeling, the guitar has that perfect noise tinged fuzzy doom sound, wrapping the brain of the listener in a warm blanket and transporting them to some other world from beginning to the end of the release.

A monumental effort worthy of the legacy Sleep left with Dopesmoker. The eternal doom track!

AVALANCHE 'Interstellar Movement' LP + T-Shirt Bundle

AVALANCHE 'Interstellar Movement' Gatefold LP + T-Shirt Bundle
Release Date 14 June 2019

limited edition of only 313 sludge orange vinyl copies,
heavy 380g gatefold cover with lyrics and liner notes,
black T-Shirt, Gildan heavy cotton
comes with a Bandcamp download code of the entire album.

Appropriately named Austrian five piece AVALANCHE conjur Sabbathian riffs on their debut full length 'Interstellar Movement'.

This is a solid slab of sludge-infused, hardcore influenced rocking riff worship, every performance is tight to a fault with not a foot wrong.

You could be forgiven for expecting a release filled with prog-anthems given the title but AVALANCHE skew towards a more Sleep orientated sci-fi approach, but with the pace of High On Fire at their most pulverising.

'Interstellar Movement' is full of churning riffs that will have you unwittingly banging your head or even outright snapping your neck on sudden thrashing D-beat sections that close out this weighty release.

These later tracks occasionally even touch on proto-thrash territory, remaining true to their sludging credentials with unmistakable crushing guitar tone and huge, dynamic drums.

The mix of the album is very clean and balanced feeling, nothing overpowers anything else and a very professional atmosphere pervades throughout.

This is a stand-out thematic rock release that promises great things to come from these boys!

ONE DAY IN FUKUSHIMA 'Ozymandias' LP
Release Date 20 April 2019

limited edition of only 333 doom black copies
one sided 12inch LP comes with full colored cover and insert with lyrics and liner notes

ONE DAY IN FUKUSHIMA crush skulls with their debut full length whirlwind of blasting deathgrind. Easily conjuring memories of Rotten Sound and Nasum, the Italian four piece offer 18 tracks on 'Ozymandias' that burn past in moments leaving molten faces and a faint scent of skank beats in their wake.

The band certainly draw plenty of metal influence on this release, but it is all cemented under the banner of the truly overpowering blast that saves it from falling under any sub-generic classification other than deathgrind in the purest sense. No messing around, no time to draw breath, no time for atmosphere, just crushing riffs following spitfire hyper blasts, all overseen by throat tearing hoarse shouted vocals that never devolve into snorts or grunts.

The production is a very clean one, in places reminiscent of Insect Warfare, with drums cutting through everything but nothing destroyed by overly compressed guitar or vocal takes that might be expected in this kind of grind.

This release makes it clear that ONE DAY IN FUKUSHIMA are a force to be acknowledged in current grind, the fact that this is only their first full length a reason to anticipate their future.

NEST crawl from a light-forsaken oubliette of hideous malformed space time and burrow directly into the neck-snapping sub-cortex of the modern sludge troglodite's brain.

The American guitar/drums duo generate the kind of sounds you might expect to hear echoing from the mouth of some abyssal gateway, fluctuating between rhythmic, pulsing riffs as of something dragging itself across the floor and the throat shredding howls of a black metal cacophony, struggling against the wind of the void.

These guys create something special within the heavily saturated Sludge scene. If pressed to come up with a genre for this release you might say it was noise tinged, blackened sludge-doom amongst others.

That might sound like a band having an identity crisis but the Kentucky two piece present an album here with 'Metempsychosis' which is absolutely thematically and musically coherent.

It embraces the dichotomy of being both abrasively ear shredding while simultaneously pulling the listener in with the promise of headbanging riffs fit to give anyone a taste for mosh coupled with dynamic performances and a serious sense of scale.

Everything on this release sounds huge.

The guitars feel like they were recorded at a distance, possibly deep underwater, and have thick black ink dripping from every note.
The drums reverberate like the blows of someone carving stone.
Over it all the vocals are suprisingly present, tying the listener to the immediacy of the sound while simultaneously evoking the bleakest black metal and sludge records.

Moments of Khanate and The Abominable Iron Sloth collide with Celtic Frost and an ever present sense of dread throghout.

Certainly one to pickup. Certainly impossible to ignore once heard.
