The masters of grind n' roll return with a new masterpiece, bristling with blasts, riffs and incomprehensible screaming. 'Extinction Solution' is a masterclass in hook-laden, 'fun' grind, but do not mistake the term here to mean 'not filled with blast beats and ear shattering vocals'.

Clocking in at around 22 minutes long the Northampton three piece waste no time with overlong intro/outro sections or frilly atmosphere, THE ATROCITY EXHIBIT go straight for the jugular, with old school Napalm Death-esque slippery guitar riffs snuggled up neatly against rock and roll rhythms that would give Lemmy cause to grin ear to ear.

The album rolls through several themes and is really nicely bookended with short, rocking riffs which, while not being identical, share a thematic similarity. The album as a whole hangs together amazingly well, there is a real sense of care in the composition of these songs. Everything is super tight from the songwriting to Matt's ridiculously clean drum sound and performances. Tracks blur from blasting gang vocals and brain shredding trem picking riffs to building chord progressions to grooving Motorhead beats and moments of dreadlocked, crust infused glory fit to have the surliest Doom fan punching the air and stamping their feet.

This is a properly excellent extreme music release that will please all smelly crust and grind fans, a strong competitor for grind album of the year!!

Dynamic French duo ROSTRES present their first full length album 'Les Corps Flottants', a journey through turgid sludge, post-rock and shoegaze. Think of a slowed down Pelican or sped up Neurosis and you will have the right idea.

These guys create huge atmosphere through pure riffage and towering, crashing drums alone. The album is fully instrumental as is often the case in this genre but that is not to it's detriment, the dynamics of the performance and at times lyrical lead guitar/synth/even string patterns wandering back and forth across the riff gives the ear everything it could want.

This is an exceptional 'post' album with a variety of sounds to both punish and reward the listener! The primary tone here can be defined as 'BIG'. These are towering, monumental riffs supported by thunderous drums and given a sense of space with glittering effect drenched noise, juxtaposed against swathes of open ground, breathing and building room until the next mountain of noise for the listener to climb.

On 'Revenant' HUMAN CULL push their already frantic crust-tinged blast-heavy grind of the last release into overdrive, featuring a huge production from Will Blackmon (Gadget, The Arson Project) and furious instrumental performances running in the style of 'FETO' era Napalm Death or 'Human 2.0' Nasum.

Songs run between monstrous fleet-fingered trem picking blast-fests to open riffing frantic d-beats but rarely drop below FAST. Lyrics are primarily about totalitarianism, following the thematic setting of an imagined medieval cyber punk future. Think of the cover of Anticapital and imagine living there, feelings of monochrome horror and anxiety blend with commentary on modern stupidity, terrorism and propaganda.

Performances are tightly controlled throughout 'Revenant' , layered chainsaw guitars and growling bass underpinned by clean and audible drums could almost be called clinical if it weren't for the organic songwriting and gritty textures of call and response twin throat-wrenching vocals and crumbling valve-based distortion.

The band display clear death metal and crust influences here, and this is certainly the closest to death metal their sound has come. Strong tones from the likes of Unleashed, the ever present Swedeath classics like Entombed and Obituary are found rubbing shoulders with the angular notes of Discordance Axis and Doom, flowing together in one gribbly monstrosity of a release.

This album is the most polished example of contemporary grind from these veterans of the UK scene.

RUINED NATION 'Restart' CD

Grinding metallic hardcore tyrants RUINED NATION return after a 6 year silence with a whirlwind of precision blastbeats on 'Restart'. It is a shame that this release marks the band's self destruction as the the fury present in the thirteen tracks is truely exemplary in the genre.

The band itself produces a clinical wall of grinding hardcore noise, Markus' vocals are in the barked roar tradition, in places touching on Gride's Iny in sound. The instrumental production is suprisingly clean and precise, with a guitar tone that would be comfortably at home crushing Wolfbrigade riffs switching between start-stop metallic riffing and pummeling d-beat cascades in the same breath. The bass has that satisfying crumbling distortion, providing weight in the background with a growl like tank treads on concrete. Drums are extremely present on this release, very highly tuned toms and snare cut through on every track and the performance is so tight you couldn't have programmed a machine to produce beats with higher precision.

There are some really interesting flickers in style, particularly later on in the album's 40minute runtime, tracks like 'Same Ol' Story' play with some creative, almost progressive slippery-fingered riffing. But it is certainly still riffing in the finest sense of the word, often conjuring shades of bands like Rotten Sound and in places even rolling into death metal territory, sounding almost like a lightning fast Cannibal Corpse with a competant drummer before snapping back to a d-beat or intensely choreographed start-stop section.

This release serves as a perfect burial for the band and while it is sad that they will no longer play together talent like this can't just sit on the shelf and the members various other outlets (IMPLORE, SIX SCORE, UGF and BLECHOPHON) are available to please the ears of fans of neck snapping heavy grooves and spleen-rupturing blasting hardcore!
